Ewa Beach Resident Recognized as Junior Sailor of the Year

By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Beverly Taylor, NR NPASE Hawaii

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii – Petty Officer 2nd Class Melvin Gonzalvo, a native of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, was recently selected as Junior Sailor of the Year (JSOY) for the Navy Reserves Navy Public Affairs Support Element (NR NPASE). The JSOY program is to officially recognize Sailors for sustained superior performance and who have proven leadership and command impact.

This award demonstrates Gonzalvo’s dedication to his command and the Navy and highlights his fast track movement to a continued successful career. Prior to working at NR NPASE, Gonzalvo was promoted to Petty Officer 2nd Class (PO2) through the Meritorious Advancement Program (MAP). The MAP program is to recognize the best Sailors who proved they are ready for the next level of responsibility.

“I am most proud of receiving a MAP to se class onboard USS Harry S. Truman and being nominated and selected as NR NPASE JSOY,” said Gonzalvo.

Gonzolvo spent 10 years in the Navy and is a mass communications specialist (MC). As an MC, he performs duties in public affairs and visual information and works at NPASE Pacific to do so at a Fleet and Component Commander level.

“The best thing about serving with NR NPASE Pacific is the sailors in the unit,” Said Gonzalvo. “Working alongside other MCs is always a blast because we constantly share our expertise, the products we produced are always epic, and the leadership in this unit is always looking out for your career and constantly finds ways to get the work you do recognized around the Navy.”

As a member of the U.S. Navy, Gonzalvo joined ranks with others of his family that served in the Navy and wanted to carry on that tradition.

“Serving as a sailor in the Navy means learning about the history, traditions, and work ethics of those who served before me,” said Gonzalvo. “As an MC in the Navy, it means sharing the Navy’s past with the sailors who will lead the Navy’s future.”

Gonzalvo graduated high school in 1995 from South Kitsap High School and later earned his degree in management from Hawaii Pacific University in 2002.

“The one thing that I have learned from serving in the Navy is to keep moving,” said Gonzalvo. “You may not get what you want the first time or even the 100th time, but you will get something as long as you keep moving forward.”
