BREMERTON, Wash. – Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Shantil Scott, a native of Sanders, Arizona, is serving as a galley supervisor aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70). She reported to Vinson in October 2016, and she is responsible for providing quality, wholesome meals to the crew and overseeing the work of junior Sailors in the galley.

“As a galley supervisor, I ensure that both the galley and our junior sailors are up to standards,” said Scott. “We are responsible for everything that happens in our respective galleys.”

Scott’s Navy journey began in April 2014. She said that growing up in a small town meant there were limited opportunities available to her, which led her to consider a military career path.

“I started exploring options of how to pay for college and how I could see the world,” said Scott. “I ended up deciding the Navy was the best branch for me to do those things.”

As Vinson undergoes an extensive maintenance period in Bremerton, Washington to make upgrades and prepare for future deployments, Scott has been working hard to get her galley and crew ready. In May, these efforts were recognized when she was selected for Sailor of the Quarter, an award given to Sailors who go above and beyond the call of duty and demonstrate the highest standards of work ethic and military bearing.

“I am just happy to bring recognition to my department through being selected for Sailor of the Quarter,” said Scott. “I believe my chain of command nominated me for it because I take such good care of my junior Sailors.”

Scott said she has enjoyed her Navy career so far and is grateful to have the support of her community back home.

“It brings me an immense amount of pride to bring recognition to a community that gives endless amounts of support to their service members of all branches,” said Scott. “I also hope to prove to the youth of my community that the military has so much more to offer than they realize.”

Scott said her hope is to get her bachelor’s degree while she is still in the Navy and earn a master’s degree in psychology once she has finished her time in service. She wants to move back home to Sanders and most importantly, give back to the community that has given her so much support.
