MILLINGTON, Tenn. - A sailor from Arauca, Colombia, serves in the U.S. Navy at Naval Medical Readiness Logistics Command (NMRLC) Yorktown, Virginia.

Seaman Apprentice Viviana Huergo Godoy, a 2016 graduate of Colombia High School, joined the Navy over a year ago from her hometown state of Colorado.

“I enlisted in the Navy because it’s the best in the world," said Huergo Godoy. “Beyond that, I yearned to be part of a purpose greater than myself and to serve the country that has bestowed upon me and countless other immigrants’ essential rights—freedom of speech, religion, and safety.”

Skills and values learned in the Navy are similar to those found in Colombia.

"I have a strict Colombian mother whose core values are unwavering strength and commitment to doing what is right," said Huergo Godoy. "She instilled in me the importance of leaving every situation with dignity and always giving my best effort. Her resilience and determination continue to inspire me, making her my ultimate role model."

NMRLC oversees the warehouse and production facility responsible for procuring, producing, managing, sustaining, prepositioning, and deploying rapidly deployable Expeditionary Medical (EXMED) Platforms. These platforms play a crucial role in supporting operational plans, exercise scenarios, and real-world missions.

At the core of Navy Medicine’s transformative journey, NMRLC designs and delivers agile, integrated capabilities to the Fleet and Fleet Marine Forces within the context of Distributed Maritime Operations. These distinctive capabilities ensure that medical assets are available to Combatant Commanders across theaters worldwide.

With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.

“We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day,” said Adm. Lisa Franchetti, chief of naval operations. “Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs.”

For Huergo Godoy, military service presents a myriad of opportunities to achieve significant accomplishments by combining her talents.

“My proudest accomplishment in the Navy was qualifying and entering the world’s finest Navy," said Huergo Godoy. "Successfully graduating from boot camp marked the beginning of my new career path as an administrator.”

Huergo Godoy serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation’s prosperity and security.

"Serving in the Navy means showing gratitude, defending the rights of this country and giving respect to our country," said Huergo Godoy. "It also provides the opportunity to learn new skills or a trade. Beyond that, serving allows you to find purpose, get physically fit and enjoy aspects to capture some of the meaningful reasons in life."

"I am a Zumba instructor, and I hope to give classes to my peers spreading joy around," added Huergo Godoy.
