MILLINGTON. Tenn. – A native of Santa Clarita, California, was recently recognized for their work while serving the U.S. Navy assigned to USS Boxer.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Edgar Romero, a 2020 graduate of Golden High School, earned the Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist and Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist insignias.

“I achieved the Aviation and Surface Warfare pins as a petty officer third class, showcasing my knowledge and expertise in both warfare areas,” said Romero. “Additionally, I earned a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for my outstanding performance in repairing mission-critical equipment while underway, ensuring we were able to continue underway training and operations.”

Romero joined the Navy three years ago. Today, Romero serves as an interior communications electrician.

“It was a rewarding experience being recognized for maintaining important equipment,” said Romero. “To resolve time-sensitive issues highlights my ability to overcome challenges and deliver results that directly contribute to the success of my ship and the Navy as a whole. Likewise, I earned pins that are typically reserved for petty officers second class. I learned knowledge above my rate and have a greater proficiency in air and surface warfare as a result. The accomplishment of these pins means I can be of greater help to my fellow sailors and the Navy at large.”

Boxer is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship and the sixth U.S. ship to bear the name of the original HMS Boxer, which was captured during the War of 1812.

Amphibious assault ships transfer Marines, equipment and supplies and can support helicopters or other aircraft. Boxer’s crew is made up of approximately 1,200 crewmembers and can accommodate up to 1,800 Marines.

As Romero and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the U.S. Navy.
