MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Ensign William Matte, a native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, recently graduated from the U.S. Navy's Officer Development School (ODS) on March 29.
Matte, a 2012 graduate of Pioneer High School, joined the Navy 11 and a half years ago. Additionally, Matte graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 2019 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
"I joined the Navy for a better opportunity in life," said Matte.
The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Ann Arbor.
"I learned that respect, kindness and dignity will get you far in life," said Matte.
ODS is one of four officer accession programs operating at Officer Training Command Newport, Rhode Island. This is the final step in a sailor’s transition into the Naval Officer Corps. This course is comprehensive, intense and designed to reinforce understanding of the responsibilities of a naval officer.
Matte was an enlisted chief petty officer before joining ODS and will now serve as a Supply Corps officer at Navy Reserve Center Detroit.
“I'm happy to graduate and move on with my naval service," said Matte.
Matte has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.
"My proudest accomplishment is making the rank of chief petty officer," said Matte. "I always looked up to my chiefs and they taught me the true meaning of servant leadership."
Matte serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation's prosperity and security.
“Serving in the Navy gives me great pride to serve my country and my sailors,” said Matte.
Matte is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.
“I'd like to give a shout out to Laurie Atwood for all her support throughout my naval career,” said Matte.
"My twin brother and I joined the Navy together when we were 17 and it changed our lives forever," added Matte. "We took that leap of faith and never looked back. If you are ever worried about whether or not to take a risk, don’t be, just commit and jump."
