MILLINGTON, Tenn. — Petty Officer 2nd Class Gerard Bermejo, a native of Las Vegas, Nevada, serving aboard USS Roosevelt, recently earned a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
Bermejo was recently recognized for his performance while operating in a high-traffic maritime environment.
“I was awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for rigging the accommodation ladder during a warm night before passing through the Suez Canal,” Bermejo said.
Receiving the award marked an important milestone in Bermejo's naval career.
“Receiving this award means a lot to me,” Bermejo said. “It means I am moving in the right direction in life and building a solid foundation for my future.”

Bermejo graduated from Durango High School in 2018.
According to Bermejo, skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Las Vegas.
“I’m from Las Vegas, Nevada, where my family gave me the opportunities to succeed,” Bermejo said.
Bermejo joined the Navy four years ago. Today, Bermejo serves as a cryptologic technician (maintenance) and is responsible for seamanship duties that support the ship’s safe navigation and daily operations.

According to Navy officials, USS Roosevelt is one of the Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, designed to provide multi-mission capabilities while supporting operations around the globe.
Destroyers like Roosevelt routinely deploy with carrier strike groups, NATO partners and allied navies, providing advanced air, surface and subsurface defense.
This year, the Navy is commemorating its contributions to the nation’s defense as the United States celebrates 250 years of independence.
According to Navy officials, for more than 250 years, the Navy has sailed the globe defending freedom and protecting prosperity.
