MILLINGTON, Tenn. — Petty Officer 2nd Class Miguel Gonzalezapodaca, a native of Wilsonville, Oregon, serving aboard USS Roosevelt, recently earned a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

“I was awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for emergency repair on the portside antenna,” Gonzalezapodaca said.

Receiving the award marked an important milestone in Gonzalezapodaca's naval career.

“The recognition of my work is important to me because it reflects my technical expertise as a technician and as a warfighter aboard USS Roosevelt,” Gonzalezapodaca said.

Gonzalezapodaca was recognized for his performance while operating in a high-traffic maritime environment.

Gonzalezapodaca graduated from Wilsonville High School in 2018.

Gonzalezapodaca joined the Navy three years ago. Today, Gonzalezapodaca serves as a cryptologic technician (maintenance) and is responsible for the installation, configuration, diagnosis, and repair of state-of-the-art electronic, computer, and network hardware and software systems in the fleet.

According to Navy officials, USS Roosevelt is one of the Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, designed to provide multi-mission capabilities while supporting operations around the globe.

Destroyers like Roosevelt routinely deploy with carrier strike groups, NATO partners and allied navies, providing advanced air, surface and subsurface defense.

This year, the Navy is commemorating its contributions to the nation’s defense as the United States celebrates 250 years of independence.

According to Navy officials, for more than 250 years, the Navy has sailed the globe defending freedom and protecting prosperity.

With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and internet access relying on secure undersea fiber-optic cables, Navy leaders emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the country.

As Gonzalezapodaca and other sailors continue to perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the U.S. Navy and protecting the American way of life.
